UK holidaymakers still skip travel insurance

14/07/2008

At least 14 per cent of UK holidaymakers do not take out travel insurance each time they travel, a new study has revealed.

According to the survey by moneysupermarket.com, only 53 per cent of travellers from the country always purchase travel insurance whenever they travel.

It also revealed that some travellers decide when to and when not take out the cover. And a quarter of people admitted to buying the cover only when they travel out of the country, just as nearly one-in-ten said they only take out insurance for long haul trips.

Head of insurance at moneysupermarket.com, Peter Gerrard, commented that travellers usually allow the excitement of taking a holiday or setting off on a trip relegate the importance of travel insurance to the background.

"Taking this risk is not such a good idea considering four-fifths (81 per cent) of Brits fall ill whilst on holiday," he advised.

Mr. Gerrard said that travel insurance is essential for making claims for cancellations, loss of cash or emergency medical treatments etc, adding that it gives policyholders peace of mind if things were to go wrong.
